Volodymyr Lytvyn, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine deems it necessary to thoroughly analyse the Proposition on Joining of Ukraine the Customs Union, taking into the Consideration its possible Consequences
Asked by Rada television channel on Friday, V.Lytvyn reminded that Ukraine had accessed the World Trade Organization, while the countries that set up the Customs Union are not the WTO member States. "If Ukraine declares its intention to access the Customs Union in conformity with the WTO principles, it is necessary to assess possible response to it and analyze whether it is not a mere wish to remain in favour, declaring willingness and knowing that the WTO sets the restrictions", he stated.
The Head of the Ukrainian Parliament believes that the expert economists shall study this issue and "point out the benefits and losses Ukraine can derive under a certain development of events, esp. in the framework of the Customs Union."
According to V.Lytvyn, the lack of such analytical approach resulted in the loss of Ukraine by accession to the WTO, as "it assumed too many obligations."
